Spring term 2018: Year One newsletter

Year One newsletter: spring term 2018 [PDF]

Next half term our topic will be space. In science we will be carrying out simple investigations related to our topic and also to the changing season and weather e.g. rainfall. The children will be observing closely and recording their findings using data that they have collected. We will also be looking at the sun as a light source and learn about the Earth and the other planets in the solar system. From this starting point we will find out about the history of space travel and the first men on the Moon. We will be visited by a pop-up planetarium on the 23rd January – information to follow in January.

In PSHE [personal, social, health and economic] we will be looking at giving compliments and the different people in our families. In RE we will be learning about Islam, focusing on artefacts, places of worship and festivals. In Art we will be exploring collage techniques with a focus on an artist who uses collage e.g. Matisse.

We will continue to send home weekly spellings this half term. These will be a mixture of high frequency words and words to support the sounds we are learning in class. Please help your child with his/her spellings by encouraging them to ‘look’, ‘say’, ‘cover’, ‘write’ and ‘check’ each word . Please ensure that your child brings his/her reading book in their book bag each day.

Maths homework will also be sent home every two weeks with writing homework later in the half term. Please remember to provide your child with a PE kit including trainers for outdoor PE.

Thank you for your support, enjoy your holidays and the Year One team wish you a Happy New Year.

Christmas party helpers needed

Natasza has asked for five helpers at the Green Class Christmas party next Tuesday (19 Dec) at 13:30.

Sign up here: https://www.volunteersignup.org/RC4HR

If there are more than five people that would like to help, Natasza asked that priority goes to those who haven’t had a chance to help out yet this term.

Thanks!

Final festive fair shout out

The festive fair is nearly upon us and this is a final call for donations of unwanted gifts, sweets for in jars for the tombolla, cakes & mince pies to sell and any last minute raffle prizes.

Donations can be dropped off on the day.

We could really do with a few volunteers to help out at 5pm with the tidy up and a couple of volunteers for the silent disco and Santa’s grotto so please get in touch if you could do a 30 minute stint.

Finally, we look forward to seeing you from 2-5pm tomorrow. Come and meet Santa, have some food, buy your tree and gifts at the market and be entertained by the school choirs.

Every penny we raise will go towards essential school activities.

thanks everyone

Zeta + Lisa

Toy Day (this Friday) and Joy Day (Fri 1 Dec)

Message from class teacher

Dear All,

It is Joy Day next Friday on the 1st of December. Please let me know if you would like to help between 9 and 12 ( most likely 11.30). We will need 5 helpers in Green Class.

Also, this Friday afternoon we are having our second class treat. The children have decided they would like a Toy Day 🙂

PSA AGM: Thu 23 Nov, 7:30pm

Just a reminder it’s the Parent–Staff Association (PSA) annual general meeting (AGM) this Thursday, 23 November, at 7.30pm in the Junior Hall.

As you are hopefully already aware from previous PSA meetings and the latest PSA newsletter, the school is planning to create a new single PSA thereby effectively merging the two existing (infant and junior) PSAs.

It would be great to have as many people there as possible.

Thank you!

Green Class assembly and photographs

Green Class assembly is this coming Tuesday (21 November) at 9:10am. Parents are invited to attend the assembly and can access the hall from drop-off via Green Class.

School photos: the photographer will be at school this coming Wednesday (22 November) to take individual photos. There will also be sibling photos for those who completed the form (only available for siblings in the nursery and infant school).
