Welcome to Year 2 2018/19

Welcome to Year Two.

The Year 2 team are as follows:

  • Red Class – Christina Elmes / Becca Furner (teachers)
  • Purple Class – Jamie Lee (teacher)
  • Blue Class – Hazel Joseph (teacher)

Year 2 Teaching Assistants are Tracy Nicolaou and Duygu Mehmet

Topics

There are 6 main topics throughout the year, which have a focus of history, geography or science. These are:-

  • Health & Growth
  • The Great Fire of London
  • Exploring our Environment
  • Flight
  • The Iron Man
  • Animals

Each half term we will send out a newsletter, which will give you more details about our topic. All the topics provide varied opportunities for Creative Art (including design and technology).

We arrange visits or trips to support our topics and our first one will be to the YMCA Haringey Club for a fitness and gymnastics session. Later in the year trips will include visits to the Science Museum, Highgate Woods and London Zoo. We are reliant on parental help to make these visits possible.

Literacy

We have daily Literacy sessions. Your child will cover a range of different forms – including stories, poetry, and non-fiction texts.

Guided reading and writing sessions focus on your child’s individual level. The children are given success criteria that they can use to assess whether they are achieving them. We continue with the phonics programme based on Letters and Sounds which the children have been following since Reception.

Children will continue to get weekly spellings for them to practise with adult support at home. We recommend the ‘Look, cover, write, check’ method of learning spellings which your child will be familiar with. There will be a weekly spelling test to begin later this half term.

Some children receive a list of sight words which they still need to learn and it is very helpful if your child can master these. Starting after half-term we will introduce a ‘Focus Text’. This will be a text selected for a half term to provide an additional stimulus for literacy and other cross-curricular activities.

Please ensure that your child brings their bookbag each day. Your child has a Comment Book in their bookbag. Please feel free to make a comment about your child’s reading, or sign to show they have read with you at home.

Numeracy

We have daily numeracy sessions and will cover a range of mathematical topics including – place value, addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, shape, space and measures and data handling. There is a great emphasis on using and applying their knowledge to solve problems and do investigations. Our curriculum develops mental fluency and teaches the connections between the different mathematical concepts. They will be given the opportunity to assess their own achievements according to their success criteria. We will continue to send homework which will be fortnightly. Our maths scheme, Abacus, includes a web-site where your children can practise the concepts they have been learning in school and consolidate their learning. Your children have a username and password to access this and there is a link on our school website.

Science

Each topic includes a science focus and sometimes, as with the current one, Health & Growth, it is the main focus of the topic.

The emphasis in Science is on skills and hands-on investigation. At home, opportunities for talking about and doing science are all around you – think…. cooking, gardening, washing up, washing, eating healthily, naming materials, describing attributes of materials, babies growing and changing and so on. We also use the Science Pod, wildlife garden and vegetable garden to enhance outdoor learning opportunities.

I.C.T.

Our weekly ICT sessions cover computing, programming, algorithms, general ICT and e-safety. Teaching the children how to stay safe when using the Internet is an integral part of our ICT curriculum.

GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT YEAR 2

Clubs

One of the features of Year 2 which all the children are looking forward to are the lunchtime and after school clubs offered. Gardening, Young Explorers, Cooking, Craft Club, wheelchair basketball, Spanish, French, dodgeball and football all take place after school. There are lunchtime clubs, for example, Board Games, Choir and Ukulele. Some clubs may incur a cost. Places are limited for both types of clubs but the lunchtime clubs work on a rota basis, so all children will get a chance during the year to choose at least one of the activities if they want to.

Assessment

We assess your children throughout the year and will also do an end of Key Stage assessment at the end of the year. As part of this the children sit assessment tasks which are used to help inform the teacher’s judgement. Later in the year there will be a meeting to explain the assessment arrangements.

PE

There is one indoor and one outdoor session per week as in Year One. We ask that your child has plimsoles or trainers for outdoor PE days, and shorts or leggings and a t-shirt for indoor PE. Please make sure PE kits are named and in a named bag. We currently have a PE specialist who is working with the children.

Class Assemblies

Parents and carers are invited to come to watch their class’s ‘showing assemblies’ which take place on Wednesday mornings first thing. There dates are always on newsletter.

Parent helpers

Parents and carers are always welcome in school. Throughout the school year, your child’s teacher will request your help for trips, special days, workshops and other activities. We have also a volunteer scheme for parents and carers who are able to dedicate regular time to support children in school. All adults that work in school or go on trips must have a List 99 check and we will organise this for you. Regular volunteers will work with children in different classes than their own and must have a DBS check. There is a coffee morning each term for parents willing to volunteer in school. This term our induction meeting is on Friday 6th October at 9.10am. Look out for more information in our school newsletters.

School rules

At the start of the school year we always spend time reminding children of our school rules. Copies of these are displayed in the classroom and around the school. We ask for your support in reinforcing our rules and in particular we are keen to emphasise to the Year 2’s the importance of respecting each other – particularly in terms of gender, faith and ethnicity. Please help us by talking to your children at home about the importance of respect for all.

Attendance and punctuality

School starts at 8.55 and the back door to the classrooms will be locked at 9.05.

After this time children will need to be brought in through the main entrance and registered as late in the office. You may be asked to wait with your child until the end of assembly.

Please try to be punctual as late arrival means lost learning and unsettles the rest of the class. Some mornings they will miss out on early-morning work if they are not on time.

If you are going to be late/absent contact the office.

Remember holidays are not to be taken in term time as they will not be authorised.

If you know that another adult will be picking up your child, or they are going to after school club, please inform your teacher or the office.

A quick reminder

The first Parents’ Evenings are 18th/19th of October. Lists will be put up nearer the time for you to sign up for a time slot.

We will be holding a question and answer session at the Year 2 Parents Curriculum Meeting on Wednesday 19th September.

This will begin promptly at 9.10 in the hall and will finish by 9.40. We look forward to seeing you there!

We all look forward to an exciting and successful year with your children.
